New England Log Furniture has evolved from a family business that began back in 1989 when I was a senior in high school. My brother was asked to build a picnic table by a local doctor for his office. While building that table a local resort owner stopped and wanted several tables for guests at his resort. By summers end over 40 tables had been built and sold off the front lawn of our parents house.
The following summer we were looking to branch out and add another product. We found an old Adirondack chair in one of the buildings of our families abandoned saw mill (S.C. Ridlon Long and Short Lumber) We used that chair as a pattern and modified it and built some. We later learned that Uncle Walter from several generations before us took respite from teaching at Tufts University at our families farm during the summers and built these chairs. We sold dozens of these chairs that summer and named it our “Uncle Walter Chair” which it is named to this day.
Several years later in the early 90’s my brother moved to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont where he discovered several northern white cedar mills. We started buying cedar to build tables and chairs and swings and everything imaginable for lawn furniture. Cross Lawn Furniture was born. The business became good enough so our dad was able to focus more on building furniture in the summer than his lifelong trade of being an auto mechanic.
Several more years later after college I started building log homes and enticed my brother into moving home from Vermont going into business with me. We continued to carry on the family tradition of building furniture when we could and during this time I decided to venture into log furniture as well. In 2005 our dad passed away and my brother took a job for a home building company in FL. I had no interest in building alone or hiring a crew so I built small bunk houses and started building more furniture on the side. It was during this time I had a casual discussion with my mother and told her if I could do nothing else and only build furniture and actually make a decent living I would be living the dream. To this she responded “so then do it”. At this advice from mom I ventured full time into building furniture and have never looked back. I now have furniture all over the United States and in several countries and look forward to furnishing a house, back yard or room for you.
